British black belt: Interview with Rosie Wylor-Owen, author of The Witch’s Touch

Rosie Wylor-Owen is an award-winning urban fantasy author with a soft spot for all things paranormal. While urban fantasy is her primary genre, she has been known to dabble in epic fantasy, horror and crime. To date, her writings have been published in literary magazines Anti-Heroin Chic, The Fiction Pool and Ariel Chart and her flash fiction “Changeling” was featured on the Manawaker Studios Podcast. Her short story “Arm-in-Arm with Alchemy” was also published by Otter Libris in their Magical Crime Scene Investigation anthology.

Can you tell us a bit about you?

I’m a British author, shiny coin collector and inexplicably, a Taekwondo black belt. (Don’t let two left feet stop you from doing anything!) I live in London with my husband, who I love travelling the world with, and as well as writing books and short stories, I run the book blog The Secret Library.

If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?

Things will get better, because you’re strong and despite everything, you will make the right big decisions. Also, you’ll never stop writing!

Did publishing your first story change your process of writing? How?

I think I began to approach writing with a more structured approach: more deadlines, more drafts and more criticism of my own work. It’s made the process of writing and organizing a little more productive, but I’m hoping I can streamline the process even more in the future. Hopefully publishing my first novel will help with that!

Are there certain characters you would like to go back to, or is there a theme or idea you’d love to work with?

Leona from The Witch’s Touch is a character I’ve used twice now, also in a piece of flash fiction called “Demonic Double Life” which was published by The Fiction Pool. Her struggles and issues are the kind I like to revisit, more to help her resolve them than for entertainment. She deserves better than the life she started out with and the prejudice she’s suffered, so I like returning to her story to help her find herself and navigate her own life.

What project are you working on now?

Right now, I’m working on my debut novel The Essence of Souls and an urban fantasy short story series which will be published on The Secret Library, called Vox Saeth: The Voice of Seven. I’m hoping for The Essence of Souls to be finished by the end of the year, and the first story of Vox Saeth will be published on the 20th August.
Anything you’d like to add?
A huge thank you to anyone who gives The Witch’s Touch a look-in, I really appreciate your support and hope you enjoy the story!
