My name is Maria Vermisoglou and I am a librarian. I live in Greece. The Cursed Girl is my first published work and it’s part of a series. I like books (obviously!), trips and chocolate. In my free time, I like making handcrafted items and reading books. When I need inspiration, I look at the ceiling for ideas. This ceiling has produced some awesome ideas!
Tell us about The Cursed Girl. (Without any spoilers!)
It’s like asking from someone to swim without drinking water. I’ll try my best but I can’t make any promises.
The Cursed Girl is about a witch who lives on Earth, in Spain in 1230. She works as a healer and uses the power of nature to help people. Eva meets some royals from the kingdom of Spain and they become friends. A war breaks out and they go to hiding. Eva helps them a lot since the two royals don’t know much about the peasant world. I think I should stop here. If you want to know more, read the book. It has magic and reality and messages about love, friendship, and loss.
Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?
All the books I have read talked about a reality that didn’t exist or about a hero who turned 16 and a series of events happened on his/her birthday. My book is a balance between reality and fiction. I have been in some of the places I described, but not in 1230 so that’s where imagination comes in. The story, however, is fantasy mostly. I was inspired mostly by the book series The Mortal Instruments and the tv series The Witches of East End.
What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?
It’s difficult to say because I liked writing most of the parts. I liked writing the parts about magic and the bond between Eva and Ritta. Of course, the scenes with Eva and Jonathan were always funny to write because opposites attract.
Did you work with an outline, or just write?
The story came to me in a weird sort of way. I always loved books. When I finished a book, I took a part of the story and created a story of my own but I never wrote down these stories. Four years ago, I finished The City of Heavenly Fire and I was thinking, what if Clary was a witch? That’s how Eva was born. After that, the story told itself. It was like magic. I knew what would happen before I knew it. I know it doesn’t make sense but it’s true. I made some research on certain things but mostly I knew what would happen. I guess you can say the story guided me and I just wrote.
If you could hang out with any character from The Cursed Girl, who would it be and why, and what would you two do?
That’s a difficult question. I would like to hang out with Eva but I would feel guilty. (Nice try but I won’t tell you.) I could hang out with Alicia or Trevor. Alicia is an easygoing character and we could ride horses and explore the beautiful countryside of Italy and Bretagne. Trevor is a funny character and it would be nice to meet a magical creature. Who wouldn’t?
What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?
The toughest criticism was that they didn’t like the story and didn’t understand it. The best compliment was by my first beta reader. It came at a moment of not believing in myself. She told me it was the best story she had ever read and she asked me if it wasn’t a movie. I was so excited and
What do you do when you are not writing?
When I’m not writing you will find me reading or writing a story in my mind. If I don’t answer to someone speaking to me, it means the story in my mind has my attention.
Is there anything that you would like to say to your readers and fans?
I am sorry. If you read the story and know the ending, I am sorry. I promise it will get better and that’s not the ending. Just the beginning.
Thanks for sharing, Maria!
