Pollution everywhere, their home was dying. Colonisation had not been easy and humanity had flourished, having developed an amazing civilization. History records were placed into vaults deep inside the planet, accessible only by certain ways to access the information. They were the last, the last to be left on the planet, only the two of them. Their oxygen supply was limited and their volunteering for this final mission was their last act of bravery they would ever perform.
“We need to Launch the survivors now, they need to get off surface. Their pods are programmed to open once things have stabilised and they can return to continue living,” he said softly, breathing through the mask covering his face.
“Very well, if they can stand the harshness of the journey, we will have been long dead by the time they return my love,” she replied, smiling at him, her breathing also impeded by the limited supply.
“This is it, we need to Launch now,” he stated as he depressed the launch button.
Engines roaring, the rockets began to lift, slowly and cumbersomely, they lifted into the sky. Trails of smoke and fire lifted them heavenward.
“Goodbye fellow citizens, be safe and travel gently. The future is yours to hold,” she whispered softly, staring at the ships, destined for deep space.
“Come, love, we haven’t got much time left. Shall we go to our favourite spot, one last time?” he asked, holding out his hand to her.
The fire trails faded into the sky above, the noise dissipating.
Together, walking to the edge of the bluff, they tired quickly, so very exhausted and feeling utterly defeated.
“We knew this was the end, yet we stayed, our love is forever,” he stated, looking over to her. Grit and dust blew around them, clouded with smoke, acrid and thick.
“Yes, we did love, our life is over and yet we will endure. One day then we will be remembered,” she replied, “kissing you is the last act I will ever do. I want no time after that. We will die from the inhalations after two minutes anyway. Come now, let’s kiss.”
Taking a breath, removing their masks, they kissed, one last time. His lips detached as he held her head and kissed her brow, “See you in the next life, my love,” he whispered as the world around them burned. Gasping, they both stared at each other in agony as they collapsed, finally dead.
He stood, naked and alone, all alone. Everything was quiet and peaceful.
“Wh.. where am I?” he asked to himself. Looking around, the lush expanse of forest covered as far as he could see.
“Hello? Who… who are you?” a voice replied as a woman sat up in the shade of the tree, she had not been visible.
Everything flickered… crackling static squealed,
“Damn, they woke, get them! They need to be destroyed. They should not be here now,” the voice said harshly.
“Come, we need to run!” he cried as he saw the white suited people enter,
“I’m Adam, and you are…?”
“Eve, my name is Eve. Hello lover…”

The discovery in the shed was something totally magical and unexpected. My first wheels, my first taste of freedom. Grandpa had left it there a long time ago, then it had been forgotten and left to gather dust. I stared at the rusty old contraption in fascination, utterly lost in the detail of the metalwork.
“You found it! I had thought it lost forever! Come, bring it out into the light and we can work on it, get it back running,” his gravelly voice exclaimed excitedly.
“Grandpa, I never heard you come in! It was buried here, in the back of the shed, under so much rubbish,” I said excitedly as I began to pull, without care or attention.
“Whoa there Sam, you need to be careful. Gently,” he said, helping me bring it out from under the piled up stuff.
Together we worked all afternoon, laughing and greasing up the chain, testing it and checking the brakes, checking if everything else worked. Our only hiccup was with the tires, they had perished badly but Grandpa and I had gone off to the bike shop to obtain new ones. Going back, the excitement mounted as we chatted animatedly about the adventures Grand-dad had had on the bike.
Finishing up finally, we were staring at the green beast, my new transport for the new school year. This was utterly fascinating to me as I had been pestering my parents for a new bicycle for months now and finally this was here after a chance discovery.
“Here, time to finally give your new beast a ride and see if it is still as good as it was back then,” Grandpa said to me as he climbed on and placed a foot on the pedal. “Actually, you should have the first ride my darling, you get on.”
“Really? I mean… wow, thanks Grandpa!” I replied, all choked up.
Nodding, he held the handlebars and waited while I climbed on.
“Go my little sparrow, go find your freedom, go find your love,” he said to me, giving me a hearty push down the road.
Pedalling madly, I screamed with joy, heading for Jenny’s house, my long time crush, legs pumping and adrenaline building. Jenny spotted me and grinned as I approached, a dust cloud billowing behind me.
“Well hello there beautiful, how are you? I love the new bike!” she said with a smirk.
“My.. my grandpas old bike, we… we just got it fixed. Can.. can I ask you for a ride?” I stammered, my heart racing. I had envied her bike for a while and now we could go adventuring together.
“I’ll be back, hang on,” she replied and twirled to get her bike.
Together we cycled across the fields to the pond. There we jumped into the cold water naked, then she swam over and kissed me, on the lips.
“I have always… wanted that Heather. You are simply beautiful my angel,” she said softly as her arms wrapped around me.

Let me Introduce myself…. Again.
I dialled the number, my finger trembling, hesitant to finally make contact with them. The killers. They knew exactly what they were doing that day they killed me. Everyone in the papers and news reports said that they were temporarily insane, but I know the Truth! I was THERE! I was their daughter that was killed.
“It’s me, Lara you Liars, you just wanted the bloodlust abated, didn’t you?” I shouted into the phone, then pressed the end call button.
I sat there, my whole body shaking, the waiting game had begun.
Fifteen Minutes later I dialled their number again – this time as they answered it, I just decided to whisper softly, “fifteen minutes… in fifteen minutes time I will be calling back again. Be ready to talk. If not then I will continue to call every fifteen minutes until you decide to talk.”
I had waited for the exact moment they had ended my ‘life’ as they thought it, fifteen years ago as a teenager in that Dark Forest. They could not have known that the body I was in was intransigent and meaningless. ‘Lara was what I was known by but many others had known me by other names, some old and ancient and some newer. I was more widely known in ancient cultures, Asase; Gauna; Heitsi-Eibib among them. My form was magic and spell-casting, conjuring and shape-shifting. Evil, no. I was merely the manifestation of Death in all forms on the human plane. Not Death as in the Terry pratchett adventures, although he was good at spinning a yarn; No, not quite like that.
“Time’s up folks, guess who is ringing again?” I muttered as I pressed redial. They had seen my power one fateful night, then hatched a plan to kill me and blame it on insanity. Not going to go into details but their plot had been devious and evil. Look it up, the Gazette should still have a copy of that article. It had worked very well with me being burnt beyond recognition. Let’s just say that it is not easy to ‘kill’ the concept of Death.
“Yes, it is me, your daughter, Lara,” I said as they answered.
“Wh… Why? You… should… should be dead!?” Faith said, her voice trembling. “Aft… After all… this time? How?”
“Well… you saw my true form. You would have questioned me and discovered that I am not true. I am placed on this plane every few cycles to become, to become greater and more powerful,” I explained softly, and I could hear my father breathing in the background.
“Killing me was the error, it allowed me to progress to the next level of existence. It had to be exactly fifteen years, almost an instant for me though. Time is nothing but… a Human construct. My kindred and I are above human weaknesses.”
“My time is now, and you must pay.”
Appearing next to them, I took them, their empty husks still alive, soulless.
They will scream Forever!
